As an additional luggage security measure, use plastic or nylon filament duct tape to completely wrap your luggage to prevent it from opening accidentally when dropped by baggage handlers. If you're going on a cruise with a lot of dressier evening activities, you may want to consider a garment bag on wheels.
We have all seen how luggage gets treated in an airport, not only by the airline staff but by us while we are running around. One idea that is quite common is to buy some very bright or easily identifiable ribbon and have that tied on to your Samsonite luggage. A bag with wheels is much easier on your shoulder and much easier to transport than a duffel bag.
Consider leaving jewelry at home. There are many overpriced kinds of luggage with a limited selection. Anything you say will not be able to persuade them, so if you have luggage that can also pass as carry on luggage, then you will find it easier to get around this problem should it arise.
If there is obvious damage done to your luggage immediately take it to the airline customer service center to report it. The last thing you need to have happen is to have a zipper break, or a seam split or have a handle break as you are walking out the door to the airport.
